From David Brooks:
The comment about how Adam I and Adam II are constantly at war with each other is scary, because it suggests that the pursuits associated with each Adam are fundamentally incompatible. Often in life we have to choose between one or the other, but the really frightening thing is that we’re frequently not aware that we are, in fact, choosing – modern society has a way to set Adam I as the default path. We don’t realise what we are compromising, most of the time till it’s too late.
The contrast between what looks good on a resume and what you wish people would say in your eulogy is probably the biggest reason why life appears so schizophrenic all the time. Widespread misconceptions about what makes us content and happy don’t help.
It thus becomes important to prioritise at the outset, if only for the sake of our sanity.
